Course Description
This practical, eight-hour classroom session provides opportunities to practice key violence prevention strategies and builds on the skills learned in the PVPC e-learning modules.

Topics covered in-depth include:

  • PVPC Framework
  • Recognizing Risks and Behaviours
  • Assessing and Planning (point-of-care risk assessments and behavioural care planning)
  • Responding to the Risk (de-escalation skills, determining when and how to call for help, applying personal safety techniques)
  • Reporting and Communicating Post Incident

Prerequisites:

  • The curriculum Provincial Violence Prevention for Medium and High Risk Departments - 8 Modules, holding all 8 Violence Prevention modules.

    If you have completed the online requirements but did not enroll into the curriculum to receive overall curriculum completion, please enroll by visiting the link here.
    Upon enrollment, if you have completed all 8 modules, it will take around 1 hour for the curriculum to appear complete under your Learning History. Once the curriculum is complete, please come back to this page and register into a Classroom session.

Employees who work in areas identified as 'High Risk' according to PVPC standards:

  • Emergency Departments/Urgent Care,
  • Mental Health & Substance Use,
  • Long Term Care,
  • Protection Services & Security,
  • Community Health Services,
  • Neurology/Brain Injury/Psychiatry,
  • Urgent and Primary Care Centres (UPCCs),
  • Primary Care Network, and
  • Medium risk areas that have formally increased their violence prevention education requirements

Virtual Sessions
If you are registering for a Virtual session (video conferencing), you will need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer with a Camera and Microphone (most laptops have this)
  • An appropriate, comfortable environment

Invitations with more information will be sent 24-48hrs prior to your session

PLEASE READ

Precautions for in-person sessions:

  • If you are symptomatic/infectious/feeling sick, do not attend – please reschedule your session.
  • Kindly arrive on time and bring your own refreshments and lunch.
  • Physical participation in practical exercises is required for this course. All participants must wear active-type clothing and appropriate footwear (i.e. running shoes) in order to safely participate. Do not wear heels, flip-flops, sandals, or open-toed shoes.

Registration and attendance:

  • Must attend for the full 7.5 hours for credit.
  • You may register for any class close to your work or home, based on the Island Health Travel and Employee Expense Policy.
  • For the safety of all participants, staff who worked a night shift should not attend class the same day. They will be asked to leave and re-register for another session.
  • If you are on the waitlist, a notification email will be sent to you if a seat opens in the course.
  • Due to the high demand for these classes, please cancel if you are unable to attend (>24 hours).
  • If you are unable to attend with less than 24 hours notice, please email violenceprevention@islandhealth.ca.

Prior to attending educational sessions, you must obtain approval from your manager or supervisor if attending on scheduled work time (or if you expect to be reimbursed if attending outside of work time). Download this form, have it signed and then keep it for your records. Thank you.
