Performance conversations are part of every leader’s portfolio – and they are often some of the hardest conversations to navigate. This highly interactive program will equip leaders with the skills, mindsets and models to support the critical leadership practice of performance conversations.
Participants will take away:
- The foundational skills of better conversations
- Effective conversations models to build clarity and commitment for others
- Tactics, resources and insights to support safe and inclusive conversations
Program Overview
Module 1: Foundational Conversation Skills
In the first module of this cohort, we will create psychologically safe practices to support feedback conversations, build awareness and insight through powerful questions, increase trust and understanding via intentional listening, and examine mindsets and identify what you really want in the conversation.
Module 2: Setting Expectations
In the next module, we will appreciate the difference clear expectations make in feedback, identify and practice applying the elements of setting expectations effectively, as well as acknowledging others for meeting and exceeding expectations.
Module 3: I-DISC Model for Feedback
After, we will look at how to increase comfort and confidence in having performance feedback conversations, learn and apply the I-DISC model to have basic performance feedback conversations, and build clarity and commitment in performance feedback conversations.
Module 4: Challenging Situations-Panel
In this panel led session, we will share feedback challenges and questions with VCH leaders in to gain strategies and insights to apply in your conversations. The leader panel will include members of:
- Psychological Safety
- Indigenous Cultural Safety
- Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
- HR/Labour Relations
Module 5: Practicing Challenging Situations
Moving forward, we look at how to develop strategies to support a real-life corrective feedback conversation, incorporate advice from panel and apply I-DISC Model to practice for the performance conversation, and practice and gain input on your approach in a safe learning environment.
Module 6: Growing as a Leader & Toolkit
In the final module, we will discover de-escalation techniques and strategies for when emotions run high, learn conversation tactics for common challenges in high stakes conversations such as denial, resistance and refusals, and workshop your greatest fear or challenge with facilitators and colleagues.
Duration of this program is 6 weeks, with a 2 hour and 30 min module every week. All sessions will be delivered online. As one sessions builds on to the next, please review the dates to ensure you are able to commit to attending all sessions.
