Consent to Care Facility Admission in British Columbia: A Course for Managers and Assessors

This course is for health care providers involved in seeking and obtaining consent to facility admission, and for managers of care facilities.

After completing this course learners will be able to:

  • Understand the rationale for the laws governing consent to care facility admission
  • Know how to seek consent to facility admission from adults or their substitutes
  • Understand who can assess the adult for incapability to give or refuse consent to care facility admission
  • Understand the principles of decisional capability and know who is able to assess for incapability to consent or refuse consent to facility admission
  • Know how to comply with British Columbia’s legal framework for seeking consent to facility admission

Staff from the following organizations: the Public Guardian and Trustee of British Columbia, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Providence Health, Vancouver Island Health Authority, Fraser Health Authority, Interior Health Authority, Northern Health Authority and Provincial Health Services Authority.

Roles include:

  • Health care providers who participate in the admission process for adults entering a care facility, including prescribed health care providers authorized to assess adults for incapability to give or refuse consent to care facility admission
  • Care facility administrators and managers overseeing the process of seeking and obtaining consent to care facility admission.
  • Health authority care managers overseeing adults receiving home and community care services
