5. Violence Prevention: Respond to the Risk: Part 1 - Perform De-escalation Communication
The Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum (PVPC) is an eLearning course to educate and train health care workers on the competencies required to reduce verbal and physical violence from patients and family members.
Providing education to employees is an important part of a comprehensive violence prevention program.
For those providing direct care, it forms the foundation for further training.
For those who do not provide direct patient care, it helps build your understanding and ability to assess situations, and know when and how to seek support or resources.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Describe why effective communication strategies are important
- Define de-escalation
- Describe how to help prevent violence and help de-escalate a person having an emotional crisis with:
o Non-verbal communication
o Vocal communication
o Verbal communication
The course supports and incorporates Indigenous Cultural Safety, Trauma Informed Practice, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion into the curriculum, and explains how they relate to violence prevention.
