ABOUT SAN'YAS:

San’yas means 'way of knowing' in Kwak’wala, the language of the Kwakwaka’wakw Peoples, whose traditional and unceded territories are located on northern Vancouver Island and surrounding areas.

The work we do at San’yas is vital for all Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada. We focus on uprooting anti-Indigenous racism and promoting cultural safety for Indigenous people. These efforts provide a foundation that is necessary for reconciliation between Indigenous and Settler peoples across Canada. Such an enormous undertaking cannot succeed without your active participation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) Training is a unique, facilitated on-line program designed to increase knowledge, enhance self-awareness, and strengthen the skills of those who work both directly and indirectly with Indigenous people. Core ICS Mental Health provides a specific focus on mental health issues for professionals working with Indigenous people in British Columbia, and specific to those who work in the mental health field.

The goal of San'yas ICS Mental Health training is to further develop individual competencies leading to positive partnerships and better mental health service access and mental health outcomes for Indigenous people.

Participants will learn about:
• Terminology;
• Diversity;
• Aspects of colonial history such as Indian Residential School and Indian Hospitals;
• Time line of historical events;
• Contexts for understanding social disparities and inequities.

Participants will also be introduced to tools for developing more effective communication and relationship building skills.

COURSE SCHEDULE AND PARTICIPATION EXPECTATIONS:

New sessions of Core ICS Mental Health start weekly on Mondays. Participants will choose from a list of currently available start dates while in the registration process.

San’yas Core ICS trainings are open for 8 weeks from each start date, and take an average of 11 hours of screen time to complete. The training is delivered entirely online and there is no requirement to be logged in at any specific time or date. We recommend setting aside 1-2 hours per week over the 8 weeks to work through the materials gradually, and to allow time to reflect on the learnings.

During the 8 weeks, participants complete self-paced coursework (readings, activities, videos) as well as participate in asynchronous group discussions guided by specially trained facilitators. You can find more info on how San’yas ICS training is delivered here.

CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION:

One week after a San'yas ICS training session closes, eligible participants will access their certificate through their profile on the San'yas platform where the certificate can be downloaded. If you have questions regarding the course certificate, please email ics@phsa.ca.

Core ICS Mental Health training is accredited by a number of professional colleges and associations.

Additional information is available on the San'yas website.
