ABOUT SAN'YAS:
San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety ('ICS') courses teach about colonization, anti-Indigenous racism, and their impacts. This learning is a critical first step towards eradicating anti-Indigenous racism in Canada and ensuring that all Indigenous people have access to culturally safe systems, structures, and services. These efforts provide a foundation that is necessary for reconciliation between Indigenous and settler peoples across Canada.
The Core ICS Health curriculum and learning activities have been designed to help participants:- Strengthen their knowledge, awareness, and skills for working with and providing health care services and supports to Indigenous people and communities
- Work more safely and effectively with Indigenous people
- Begin considering their role in correcting, rebuilding and transforming systems to uproot Indigenous-specific racism
San’yas means 'way of knowing' in Kwak’wala, the language of the Kwakwaka’wakw Peoples, whose traditional and unceded territories are located on northern Vancouver Island and surrounding areas.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
This course delivered over an online platform, where you will be part of a group of learners and will have the support of San’yas facilitators. Once your group begins you will have a total of 8 weeks’ access to your course. You will work at your own pace through learning modules which include readings, videos, knowledge checks, and other activities. You will also take part in facilitated, asynchronous discussions with your cohort at different points through the course.
After you’ve worked through the modules you are expected to log in occasionally to read & respond to new discussion posts for the remainder of the 8 weeks. It takes about 10 hours to complete the course, which we recommend doing gradually. To earn a certificate of completion for this training, you must fully engage with the discussions in addition to completing the course modules. 1 week after your group’s session ends, you will be able to download the certificate from your profile on the San’yas platform.
You will be able to choose your course's start date while registering. If you do not complete the course within the 8-week access window, the fee paid by PHSA for your training space will be wasted.
CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION:
One week after a San'yas ICS training session closes, eligible participants will access their certificate through their profile on the San'yas platform where the certificate can be downloaded. If you have questions regarding the course certificate, please email ics@sanyas.ca.
Core ICS Health training is accredited by a number of professional colleges and associations.
