PBCO - Safe Transfusion Practice: Second Edition
This course is intended to support health care professionals in achieving and or maintaining any necessary transfusion competencies.
Effective June 27, 2025: A new IVIG module has been added as Part 2 within this course. Both Part 1 and Part 2 must be completed to receive the Certificate of Completion. Please refer to your Health Authority's training and re-certification requirements.
Please Note:
BC Children's and Women's (C&W) staff: This course is NOT REQUIRED for C&W staff. C&W staff must complete one of the C&W site-specific modules: “Administration of Blood-Neonatal” (6625), “Administration of Blood-Pediatric” (6626), or “Administration of Blood-Adult” (6627).
Interior Health (IH) staff: IH staff should NOT ENROLL in this course on LearningHub. Please complete IH’s i-Learn course #1829 "Safe Transfusions Practices" instead.
"Safe Transfusion Practice: Second Edition" topics include:
- Blood basics
- Consent and prescriber’s order
- Pre-transfusion blood sampling and patient identification
- Transport of blood components and products
- Transfusion
- Management of transfusion reactions
- Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG)
Some learners may choose to only complete selected modules based on their role in the clinical transfusion process or local site/Health Authority requirements.
