PHSA - TSBC - Specialist Trauma Advisory Network (STAN) - The Management of Blunt Liver Injury in Adults
The purpose of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to review best evidence and generate expert consensus on recommendations for the management of isolated blunt liver trauma in adult patients (age ≥16 years).
STAN in collaboration with provincial thoraco-abdominal experts and trauma clinicians developed these guidelines to enhance communication amongst all clinicians when caring for the major trauma patient. The goal of this learning module is to ensure that clinicians who are providing care for major trauma patients have the clinical knowledge and guidance to care for the adult who has sustained a traumatic liver injury.
At the end of this learning module you will be able to:
Understand the initial management of patients with confirmed or suspected isolated blunt liver injuries;
Determine the indications for operative management and non-operative management in blunt liver injuries:
What are the indications to transfer patients to a higher level of care.
