Our health is determined by many factors, including the environment. This dependence is captured by the term “planetary health.” The climate crisis is not the only ecological crisis we are facing, but it represents the biggest threat to our health and well-being. As climate and weather become more extreme, their impacts on human health are growing in intensity and frequency. In addition to its direct impacts on human health, climate change can also cause indirect impacts on human health. One key way this happens is when climate-related events compromise the ability of health systems to provide high-quality care. When we put this all together, we find ourselves in a situation in which climate change is increasing care needs at the same time as it is reducing health system capacity to meet care needs. Upon completing this course you will have a deeper understanding of the ways in which health and health systems are affected by climate change, and the opportunities to make health care more sustainable. |
