PHSA - PC - PHS - Moral Distress: Recognition and Response

Moral distress is recognized by the Mental Health Commission of Canada as one of the factors affecting psychological health & safety in the workplace for health care providers. This interactive session helps participants to recognize the signs of moral distress and understand its impacts. Participants will explore strategies to address moral distress at individual, team, and organizational levels, fostering a psychologically safe and ethical work environment.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between emotional distress, moral distress and moral injury.
  2. Recognize the signs, sources and contributing factors of moral distress in themselves and their teams.
  3. Understand the impact of moral distress on individuals, teams, and organizations, including emotional, behavioural, and physical effects.
  4. Apply psychologically safe, practical leadership strategies to respond to moral distress at individual, team, and organizational levels.
