PHSA - BCCH - Oncology, Hematology and BMT: Blood and Marrow Transplant
Providing nursing care to Hematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant patients (formerly known as Bone Marrow Transplant or stem cell transplant) is complex due to the nature of treatment regimens, related side effects, patient isolation guidelines, and lengthy hospital stays. Patients and families require specific education before, during and after these procedures. Patients also require intense, individualized physical, psychosocial and developmental nursing support. During this 3 day education series the following topics will be discussed: hematology and immunology of BMT; diseases treated by BMT; histocompatability testing; donor selection; isolation guidelines; nursing assessment and care of patients throughout the process; acute and chronic complications; graft vs. host disease; patient and family teaching. A variety of teaching strategies are used, including lecture, case studies, role-playing, skill demonstration and games!Pediatric Oncology Nurses who have worked in pediatric oncology for at least 6-9 months.
