Chapter 5b. NPWT Level Two: Dressing Application
As you work through the first module, Open Wound Dressing Application, you will learn:
• What information should be included in a client-specific NPWT Open Wound order.
• What techniques to use to effectively protecting the periwound/surrounding skin.
• How wound assessment findings assist with determining how to fill undermining/sinus tracts & wound cavity.
• What are the components of a NPWT dressing and how they are used.
• How to create the dressing’s negative pressure environment.
• How to ensure client safety and comfort during their NPWT.
• When NPWT should be considered for discontinuation.
• How to develop a NPWT treatment plan (as per specific nursing scope of practice).
Following this ~35min module, there are six short videos to view (~25mins for all) and then a 10 question quiz for you to complete.
Working through the second module, Closed Incision & Skin Graft Dressing Management, you will learn:
• What are the benefits and mechanism of action for NPWT over incisions and grafts.
• What are the requirements of a client-specific order and appropriate treatment plan.
• How to create a closed incision NPWT dressing from individual components.
• How single-use devices create a NPWT environment.
• What strategies to use to ensure client safety and comfort.
• When NPWT should be considered for discontinuation.
Following this ~20min module, there is a 5 question quiz for you to complete.
