MoCA-MIS© Version 8.1 Vancouver Island Coastal First Nations

Course Description: This course (containing three learning modules) has been designed to facilitate the clinician’s knowledge and skills about administering the MoCA-MIS© Version 8.1 Vancouver Island Coastal First Nations.

Learning Outcomes:

Module One: Approach Upon completion, the clinician will be able to describe:

  • The consequences of the history and legacy of colonization, residential schools and racism for Indigenous seniors and their families;
  • The concepts necessary to bring a trauma-informed lens to their working relationship with Indigenous seniors and their families; and,
  • How to conduct a respectful interview with Indigenous seniors.

Module Two: Knowledge Upon completion, the clinician will be able to:

  • Define Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI);
  • Describe the advantages and limitations of using the MoCA©;
  • Describe the test re-test time frame; and,
  • Describe when to use different versions of the MoCA©.

Module Three: Administration Upon completion, the clinician will be able to:

  • Describe how to administer the MoCA©-MIS 8.1 Vancouver Island Coastal First Nations.

Please note:

  • The modules contained within this course are to be completed in numerical order.
  • Prior to administering the tool with Indigenous seniors, practice test administration, at least twice, with someone who has considerable experience administering the tool to benefit from coaching and feedback.

Prerequisites

  1. Qualified healthcare professionals (degree, certificate or license) who have lived experience in Indigenous culture:
  • are themselves Indigenous, or
  • have historically lived or worked closely with First Nations People.

OR

  1. Qualified professionals (degree, certificate or license) who have completed the following core training course: San'yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training - ICS (Online)
