Purpose

Communicating and Assessing Risk of ViolenceViolence in healthcare settings is an increasing global problem. Workplace violence is three times more likely to occur among health care staff than in any other occupation. Identifying and communicating the potential risk for violence protects those interacting with the patient and improves the patient journey. This course provides a preventative framework for violence mitigation that supports both health care workers and patients in creating a culture of safety within Island Health.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Recognize why communicating and assessing the risk of violence is essential for creating a culture of safety for both staff and patients.
  • Identify the benefits of assessing and communicating a risk of violence.
  • Demonstrate accurate decision-making, based on screening and assessment outcomes.
  • Determine when, why and how to implement a person-centred Behavioural Care Plan.
  • Determine when to activate or deactivate a History of Violence Alert.

This course is meant for all regulated Health Care Professionals or those who have a Risk of Violence Assessment within their scope of practice or role delegated by their program.
