Influenza Immunization Competency Course: Foundations of Influenza Disease & Vaccines

To learn or refresh knowledge regarding influenza disease, influenza vaccines and practice considerations.

While the complete BCCDC Immunization Competency Course is recommended for all new vaccine providers, this course has been adapted to be a comprehensive competency course, based on the Immunization Competencies for BC Health Professionals (an adaptation of the Public Health Agency of Canada Immunization Competencies), for new immunizers who will be providing influenza vaccines only.

For Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), this course meets the BCCNM’s additional education requirement (condition) for LPNs to autonomously administer influenza vaccines. However, the anaphylaxis content in this course does not replace the Anaphylaxis Initial Emergency Treatment by Nurses (Adult & Pediatric). Completion of this course is a requirement (condition) for LPNs to autonomously administer vaccines. A link to the Anaphylaxis course is found under additional education requirements within this learning module.

It is important to note that learners who competed the Foundations of Influenza: Disease & Vaccines course prior to September 2, 2022 will not have completed the revised comprehensive influenza immunization competency course.

Although this course can be taken as a competency course, it continues to be recommended for any health care provider or student in BC who is interested in learning more about influenza disease and vaccines.

Any interested immunizer (PHNs, Pharmacists, Physicians, Naturopathic Physicians, Midwives, LPNs, RNs, RPNs, OHNs, Travel Nurses, Vaccine Trial Nurses) as well as interested health care students.
