Diversity Competency Module 3: Communicating with Diverse Populations (Online)

The Communicating with Diverse Populations education module will provide you with an introduction to the basics of diversity competent communication in the health care setting.

This education will cover:

  • Why cross-cultural communication is important for health outcomes and quality of care;
  • The barriers to cross-cultural communication, such as power dynamics, cultural differences, and health literacy;
  • Basic frameworks for how to overcome barriers in cross-cultural communication; and,
  • More advanced approaches, which are effective and appropriate for understanding the patient’s/client’s/resident’s beliefs about illness and health. These can inform the development of a suitable care plan.

Note: This module is divided into two sections. Please set aside one (1) hour for each section, for a total of two hours.


All healthcare professionals, or those interested in diversity-related issues.
