RAI 2.0 Coding for Beginners

This interactive course for LPN/RN/RPN and Allied staff of Island Health Residential Services owned and operated facilities focuses on documenting (coding) assessment findings using the RAI-MDS 2.0.The primary resource used is the RAI-MDS 2.0 manual, along with relevant job aids. Participants will practice completing sections of the assessment to gain an appreciation of the structure, content and interpretation of the form and manual. The need and importance of accuracy and consistency is emphasized through a variety of activities and discussions.

Upon completing this training, you will be able to:

  1. Use the RAI-MDS 2.0 Manual to interpret and apply coding standards
  2. Use your clinical knowledge and experience to better understand a person’s strengths, needs and preferences
  3. Recognize the need and importance for accuracy and consistency in documenting (coding) assessment findings
  4. Recognize how the RAI-MDS 2.0 generates clinical outputs that inform and support resident care

PLEASE NOTE: A prerequisite activity must be completed prior to attending this course. See "Other Information" below.


LPN/RN/RPN and Allied Health staff hired at Island Health Residential Services owned and operated facilities.
This course is open for audit for any current Island Health Residential Nurse or allied professional who has previously attended, but wishes to attend as a refresher. This course "Refresher" is NOT paid by Island Health.

    PLEASE NOTE:
  • Participants are required to complete this Pre-Work Activity 2 weeks prior to attending this session and bring their completed work to the RAI 2.0 Coding class.
  • There is a 2 hour paid time remuneration for this self-study (not applicable to those taking the course as a refresher).
  • RAI training is mandatory for all Island Health residential nursing and allied staff.
